There’s a strong shift happening in how product teams are being asked to think about what they’re building. Rather than shipping isolated features, teams are increasingly being asked to design for connection, extension and reuse.
The language of platforms, APIs, integrations and modular architectures is showing up in briefs that used to be much more feature-led. This page covers why, what hiring managers are looking for, and how to test for it in interview.
Why platform thinking is becoming a hiring priority
The reason is fairly straightforward. Businesses want to move faster, expand into adjacent products, and build on top of what they already have without rewriting it every time.
That kind of expansion is only possible if the product is designed as a platform from the outset, rather than retrofitted into one later.
What’s showing up in senior product briefs
Candidates who can talk fluently about API design, integration strategy and modular architecture are attracting real interest right now, particularly at Senior PM, Product Lead and Head of Product level in SaaS environments.
Language around “product ecosystems”, “reusable components” and “multi-product portfolios” is now appearing in briefs that would have been feature-led six months ago.
The capability that keeps deciding these processes
The capability that tips these interviews isn’t purely technical. It’s systems thinking. The ability to:
- Hold the whole ecosystem in your head
- Understand how a decision on one product surface affects three others downstream
- Sit with engineering and reason through trade-offs, rather than defer to them
- Design with the second and third-order effects in mind
Product managers who can do that tend to stand out quickly, especially in interview panels that include engineering leadership.
How to test for systems thinking in interviews
A standard behavioural interview usually doesn’t surface it. What tends to work better:
- A case study that spans two or three connected product surfaces
- A whiteboard exercise on API or integration design
- A technical conversation with the engineering lead, not just a competency chat with product
Even one of those, well-designed, will usually tell you what you need to know.
FAQ
What is platform product management?
It’s product management focused on building scalable, connected systems: APIs, integrations, modular components and multi-product portfolios, rather than isolated features. It’s most common in SaaS, but the language is spreading into enterprise and fintech briefs too.
What technical skills should a platform PM have?
Fluent in API design and integration strategy, comfortable reasoning about modular architecture and technical trade-offs with engineering, and confident holding multi-product portfolios in their head. Deep coding isn’t required, but technical credibility is.
How do you interview for systems thinking in a product manager?
Case studies that span connected product surfaces, whiteboard exercises on API or integration design, or a technical conversation with the engineering lead. Standard behavioural interviews usually miss it.
Is platform experience only relevant in SaaS?
It’s most concentrated in SaaS, but the same principles are showing up in enterprise, fintech and marketplace hiring where product surfaces are increasingly connected.
How is Brightbox helping SaaS clients hire platform PMs?
By screening early for systems thinking and technical credibility, not just platform-adjacent job titles. We surface the depth or the gap before candidates reach your engineering panel.
